The BEBUC Scholarship Program: A new Perspective for the Congolese Educational System

Young medical doctors from the Université Officielle de Mbuji-Mayi (UOM) after their successful bachelor graduation, among them the BEBUC scholars Hervé Mbuyamba (second left) and Constantin Mpoyi (second right)
In order to break the vicious circle of poverty, bad access to education, and over-aging of the academic staff, the program supports excellent young Congolese and accompanies them by an individual mentoring during their academic career to reach their professorship in the Congo. The young scientists shall renew the academic formation, which has severely suffered from dictatorship and civil war, and shall, thus, help to improve life conditions in their home country. Presently nearly 200 students are being supported, mainly from life sciences.
