Representatives of the Else Kröner Fresenius Foundation (EKFS), TU Dresden and the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden signed the contract for the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health Dresden in the presence of the State Ministers for Research and Economics today (Wednesday, 4th September, 2019). Starting in September 2019, the foundation will provide a total of 40 million euro over ten years to support the establishment of innovative educational and organisational structures, interdisciplinary cooperation and the expansion of additional research resources. Dresden's concept was the winner in a nationwide EKFS competition. The aim of the center is to tap into the potential of digitalisation in medicine in order to improve patient care.

The 27 draft proposals submitted were assessed by expert international appraisers from April to June 2018 and evaluated by a jury comprised of high-echelon representatives from the medical science, funding and advisory consulting landscape. On the basis of their findings, the Foundation Board at EKFS decided early in July 2018 which 5 faculties are going to be allowed to enter the next round with a full proposal by the end of 2018.

The ultimate decision as to which faculty shall receive the funding has been taken by the end of March 2019.
The Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung selected the University of Dresden to receive the funding of EUR 40 million: The Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health is established.
