The foundations EKFS and the Eva Luise und Horst Köhler Stiftung (ELHKS) have been funding two research programs concerned with rare diseases since 2019.

Both programs for physicians received funds amounting to one million euros apiece over three years.

A special feature of the research programs is the cooperation on the part of multiple university locations. Three locations are respectively involved in the program named RISE and the program named RECORD. The number of highly qualified Clinician Scientists in the distinctly specialized subject areas is increased as a result of the cooperative efforts. Following positive evaluation in June 2022, both programs were extended for another three years.

RISE – Rare Important Syndromes in Endocrinology

Professor Dr. Angela Hübner, Speaker (Universitätsklinikum Dresden); Professor Dr Nicole Reisch (LMU München);
Professor Dr Martin Fassnacht (Würzburg)

The thematic focus of the  research program lies on clinically oriented projects associated with adrenal gland disorders such as Cushing syndrome, adrenal cancer or adrenal insufficiency. Alongside the outstanding research projects conducted by the program fellows, a very effective, location-transcending cooperation and lively mentoring have established themselves within the program. The up-and-coming scientific generation benefits from the strengths of the centers and work groups involved in the field of adrenal gland research. The spectrum of subjects is going to be expanded in the second funding period as of 2023. Among other objectives, this is intended to additionally cover the transition from pediatrics to adult medicine, as well as the fields of metabolism and inflammation.

RECORD - REsearch Center On Rare kidney Diseases

Professor Dr Mario Schiffer, Speaker (Universitätsklinikum Erlangen); Professor Dr Tobias B. Huber (Hamburg); Professor Dr Thomas Benzing (Köln)

This research program enhances the professional training of young Clinician Scientists who want to advance their education in the field of rare kidney diseases on both a clinical and a scientific level. The training received from well-trained clinical researchers who teach using substantiated clinical and scientific expertise from this area has proved to be important, especially in the field of rare kidney diseases. The program therefore provides these young Clinician Scientists with a research and educational training curriculum which combines the translational aspect of patient healthcare with clinical research and fundamental research. Transregional networking enables both a scientific and clinical exchange with acknowledged nephrological departments.
