XDP is a Parkinson's-like hereditary disorder that occurs mainly in the Philippines, where it affects almost exclusively males. In recent years, we have been able to decipher many of the genetic mechanisms that influence the age of onset and expression of this disease. In addition to genetic factors that are fixed from birth, epigenetic factors can change over time and represent a novel approach that has already been used, for example, to show that Parkinson's is associated with an accelerated aging process. In this project, we will now use this technique to unravel epigenetic mechanisms in XDP that can subsequently improve treatment and prognosis for patients.
