This research project investigates the function of a protein naturally produced in the body. This protein may be able to protect the arteries from calcification.

Medial vascular calcification describes the calcification of the muscular layer of the arteries. This calcification occurs during aging, and is rapidly accelerated in chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus. This medial vascular calcification is closely associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction or stroke.

This research project investigates the function of a protein naturally produced in the body. This protein may be able to protect the arteries from calcification. The experiments conducted in this project investigate the anti-calcific properties of the protein, and the underlying mechanisms. These insights may be helpful to develop new treatment strategies to prevent vascular calcification.
