Situation:

Large sections of Iraqi society have suffered severe violence, including domestic and sexualised violence, torture and terror. This leads to psychological problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression. Trained professionals who support people who have experienced violence need supervision and further training opportunities.

Objectives:

The project contributes to improving the capacity of clinical professionals in the field of trauma therapy in Iraq. Survivors of violence in Iraq benefit from improved care structures.

Indicators:

Indicator 1: At least 90% of participants report that the content taught was relevant and helpful for their clinical work and that they observed an increase in competence.

Indicator 2: At least 90% of participants report that the supervision was relevant and helpful for their clinical practice.

Indicator 3: At least 90% of participants report that they feel strengthened in their commitment through the international exchange and are in professional contact with colleagues from other crisis regions beyond the programme.

Measures:

a) Online supervision: 15 graduates of the training in psychotraumatology receive online supervision from supervisors in Germany.

b) In-depth seminar for professionals: A 5-day in-depth seminar takes place in Iraq, in which 20 graduates of the training in psychotraumatology take part.

c) International refresher and advanced seminar: Six graduates of the training in psychotraumatology take part in an international refresher and advanced seminar in Germany.

Sustainability:

The participants of the supervision and in-depth seminars will apply their newly acquired knowledge in the trauma support centres of the Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights and in the public health system. They will work directly with affected people as therapists. As only local professionals are trained in this project, knowledge is anchored locally in the long term. The training of professionals raises awareness of trauma and its consequences in Iraqi society.

Special features:

Activity c enables an international exchange and joint learning between therapists and people from helping professions working in different contexts and regions of the world. They learn from each other and strengthen their joint commitment and support for people who have experienced violence.
