Strengthening the rehabilitation of adults and children with disabilities

Situation:
Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in Asia, with growing inequalities between urban and rural areas. The majority of persons with disabilities and their families are trapped in a cycle of poverty and marginalization. Disability increases with age and is higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The percentage of the population living with disabilities is among the highest in the world.
Objectives:
The quality of life of people with disabilities and vulnerable people is improved in Kampong Cham and Tboung Khmum provinces in Cambodia.
- Number of people with disabilities using the rehabilitation services: 8.000 PRC clients, including 35% females and 45% children.
- Structures are strengthened and have integrated procedures to monitor and ensure the quality of their services (satisfaction survey, RMS)
- 35 professionals trained for rehabilitation
- Ongoing provision of rehabilitation services at Kampong Cham PRC, including tele-rehabilitation services
- Provide home based interventions such as assistive devices, home and working tools adaptations for household members with mobility, sensory, speech/language and/or intellectual impairments
- Strengthen the capacity of rehabilitation professionals in Kampong Cham Physical Rehabilitation Center (management, governance and service provision) and 5 other PRCs to comply with national standards
The support and capacity building of the partners and beneficiaries will ensure continuity of the actions undertaken and their sustainability. We work closely with local and national stakeholders to improve information sharing and coordination of interventions, through this project.
The project design is based on a comprehensive & participatory approach that aims to involve all stakeholders. This multi-stakeholder approach will strengthen existing institutions to build local ownership, which will help to ensure sustainable changes in policy & practice. It also aims to create a community of practice and knowledge that will further support institutional change. Working with disabled people's organisations will ensure that people with disabilities are empowered and that their voices are represented in the commune legal processes.
