Situation:

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2014, women have been particularly affected, experiencing various forms of conflict-related gender-based violence and facing increasingly limited access to healthcare. Since 2022, cases of gender-based violence have risen by 36 per cent, and 6.7 million women are in need of life-saving assistance (UN Women 2025).

Objectives:

Improving mental health and social participation in public life for women and girls in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

Indicators:
  • At least 250 women and girls have received psychological counselling, and at least 50% indicate that their psychological well-being has improved, that they have developed an awareness for their needs and that they know where and how to get support.
  • At least 120 women and girls have participated in therapeutic group activities and at least 50% of them have increased their social participation
  • At least 150 people have acquired a higher level of knowledge about gender-based and sexualised violence and its impact on health through information events.

Measures:
  • Individual psychosocial counselling
  • Group activities (art therapy, music and body therapy, self-help groups)
  • Capacity building for civil society providers of mental health services (partner organisations)
  • Awareness-raising on gender-based violence and its impact on health

Sustainability:

Special features:

By establishing and strengthening local support structures organised by women themselves, the existing Ukrainian healthcare system in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast is complemented, and its burden is reduced in the long term. Through psychosocial support, the psychological well-being of women and girls in the region is improved, and they develop specific knowledge and skills that enable them to stabilise themselves and support others.
