Development and Implementation of an Antibiotic Stewardship Program in Kampala, Uganda

Organisation: Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, University Hospital Leipzig, University of Leipzig
Partner country: Uganda
Partner organisation in partner country: Kiruddu Referral Hospital, Infectious Diseases Institute, Makerere University
Microbiology of Kiruddu Referral Hospital

Antimicrobial resistance is on the rise globally, leading to increasing numbers of virtually untreatable infections with devastating consequences for the affected patients. Together with Kiruddu Referral Hospital we aim to develop and implement an Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ABS), which combines systematic, sustainable efforts to secure the rational use of anti-infective treatments. Based on the collection and analysis of local data on bacterial spectrum and empirical therapy, comprehensive pocket guides for the daily clinical work will be developed and used for continuous training.
