Age-specific diagnostic and therapeutic psychiatric services for children and adolescents are not available in Iraq and Palestine. To fill this gap, 42 postgraduates from 14 medical centers throughout both countries receive training based on international medical specialization standards over a series of 7 bi-annual intensive courses. Embedded in this program, 5 alumni co-trainers are obtaining qualification to train others in their respective region in accordance with current didactic standards. All participants acquire knowledge and techniques for clinical work with children, adolescents, and their families. In addition, participants build competencies for peer and public education on child mental health issues. The training program covers basics in psychiatry and psychotherapy, child trauma therapy and mental health interventions for refugee camps and community settings. In addition, focus groups are held to formulate statement papers for mental health stakeholders and policy makers.
